Waste carrier software compared

By James Parry, head of product at Tippa · Last checked

In short: carriers need a transfer note for every load, and will report their own movements to Defra once Digital Waste Tracking reaches carriers. Products differ most on how they charge (per note, per vehicle or per user), their driver app, and how much of the office’s work they take on. The table sets out what each product says on its own website.

The products, side by side

As each product’s own website described it on , or on the date under its name where there is one. Prices are as each supplier gives them, and may or may not include VAT. Check the supplier’s website before you buy.

Tippa compared, one to one

How we compared them

We read each product’s own website on : who it says it’s for, its published prices, any free option, its apps and the main things it says it does. That makes this a comparison on paper. We haven’t measured how easy each is to use, how reliable it is or how good its support is, and a feature a website doesn’t mention may still exist.

We make Tippa, so it’s listed first and marked as ours; the rest are in alphabetical order. We’ve tried to be fair to every product, and to say plainly where Tippa is weaker. If anything here is wrong or out of date, email support@tip-pa.co.uk and we’ll check it and put it right. Product names belong to their owners.

What to look for

  • How it charges: per note, per vehicle, per driver or per user. Price it for your whole fleet and every driver, not just the office.
  • The driver’s app: whether it works with no signal, takes signatures and photos, and is easy for drivers to pick up.
  • Signatures: whether the producer can sign the transfer note online when nobody’s there to sign.
  • The fleet: daily vehicle checks, MOT and inspection dates, and planning each driver’s day.
  • Registers: whether it checks the registrations of the carriers and sites you deal with.
  • Defra’s carrier reporting: Defra is still designing it, so ask each supplier how and when they’ll support it.
  • Billing: invoices from the jobs, and links to your accounts software.

Our guide to choosing digital waste tracking software has a fuller checklist of questions to ask any supplier.

Where Tippa is strong, and where it isn’t

Strong

  • Unlimited drivers are free, and so are their daily vehicle checks and each vehicle’s MOT, tax and inspection dates.
  • The producer can sign the transfer note online, before or after the collection, for free, and signs once for a job needing several loads rather than for every lorry.
  • Hazardous waste consignment notes filled in from each collection on its nation’s own form, free, for the driver to open on their phone and print, and one note for a carrier’s round in Scotland or Northern Ireland.
  • Each driver’s day can be planned as a round and sent to their phone, and the office’s changes reach the driver (Round Planning add-on).
  • The producer is told when their waste is collected and again when it’s received, by email (free), text or WhatsApp, and receipts and invoices can go by text or WhatsApp too, on the free plan.
  • The office is alerted as soon as a driver can’t make a collection, finds a defect on their vehicle or adds a stop to their round, with a notification on a phone or computer, free.
  • Invoices from the jobs, credit notes, payments and statements (Invoicing add-on), and every carrier checked on all four UK registers.

Not there yet

  • There’s no App Store or Google Play app yet: drivers use the web app on their phone, which works with no signal.
  • It doesn’t plan the quickest route or track vehicles by GPS: the office puts a round’s stops in order.
  • There’s no direct link to Xero, Sage or QuickBooks; invoices and payments export as CSV.

Common questions

Is there free software for waste carriers?

Some products have a free option: the “Free option” column in the table shows what each offered when we checked. In Tippa, one vehicle, unlimited drivers and unlimited collections and transfer notes are free.

Do waste carriers have to use Digital Waste Tracking?

Not yet. Defra plans to bring carriers, brokers and dealers in after receiving sites. Our guide to digital waste tracking for carriers has the dates and what’s known so far.

What should a waste carrier’s driver app do?

At least: work with no signal, record the waste and its transfer note at the collection, take the producer’s signature and photos, and show the driver their day. Vehicle checks on the same phone save paper.

How did you compare these products?

We read each product’s own website on : who it says it’s for, its published prices, any free option, its apps and the main things it says it does. That makes this a comparison on paper. We haven’t measured how easy each is to use, how reliable it is or how good its support is, and a feature a website doesn’t mention may still exist.

How Tippa helps

Tippa gives every driver the day’s collections on their phone, gets the transfer note signed, and keeps the vehicles’ checks and dates in one place.

This page compares what each product’s own website said on the date shown. It isn’t a review or a recommendation of any product, and features and prices change. Check with each supplier before you buy.
