Skip hire software compared
In short: skip hire is carrying, and often receiving at your own yard too, so the rules for transfer notes and, at a permitted yard, Digital Waste Tracking both apply. Some products are built just for skip hire; others are general waste software that covers skips. The table sets out what each product says on its own website.
The products, side by side
As each product’s own website described it on , or on the date under its name where there is one. Prices are as each supplier gives them, and may or may not include VAT. Check the supplier’s website before you buy.

Tippa compared, one to one
How we compared them
We read each product’s own website on : who it says it’s for, its published prices, any free option, its apps and the main things it says it does. That makes this a comparison on paper. We haven’t measured how easy each is to use, how reliable it is or how good its support is, and a feature a website doesn’t mention may still exist.
We make Tippa, so it’s listed first and marked as ours; the rest are in alphabetical order. We’ve tried to be fair to every product, and to say plainly where Tippa is weaker. If anything here is wrong or out of date, email support@tip-pa.co.uk and we’ll check it and put it right. Product names belong to their owners.
What to look for
- Where every skip is: what’s out, at which address, and what’s overdue.
- Bookings: deliveries, exchanges and collections booked for a day and put on drivers’ rounds, and whether customers can book online.
- Road permits: whether it keeps each skip’s council permit and warns before it runs out.
- Your yard: if you receive waste, Defra reporting and your returns, and how it handles your weighbridge.
- Billing: hire charges, days kept over, and links to your accounts software or online payment.
- Price for your fleet: per user, per driver or per vehicle, with any add-ons you’d need.
Our guide to choosing digital waste tracking software has a fuller checklist of questions to ask any supplier.
Where Tippa is strong, and where it isn’t
Strong
- The core tools, including Defra reporting for your yard, are free; tracking skips on hire is one add-on (Skip Hire), which you can try free for a month.
- Skips on hire with overdue lists, reminders to customers before a skip is due back, road permits, a numbered register with QR labels and a map of the skips out.
- Deliveries, exchanges and collections go on drivers’ rounds with the day’s other work, and drivers mark them done from their phone, even with no signal.
- Hire charges, days kept over and road permit costs are invoiced from the hires (with the Invoicing add-on).
Not there yet
- Customers can’t book a skip online, and Tippa doesn’t take card payments.
- There’s no App Store or Google Play app yet: drivers use the web app on their phone.
- There’s no direct link to Xero, Sage or QuickBooks, and it doesn’t read a weighbridge indicator.
Common questions
What is the best software for a skip hire business?
It depends on what you need most: skip tracking and bookings, your yard’s Defra reporting and returns, or billing. Use the “What to look for” list on this page, price each product for your own fleet, and ask for a trial.
Does skip hire software need to do Digital Waste Tracking?
If your yard is a permitted site that receives waste, every load it receives has to be reported to Defra. Our digital waste tracking guide explains who must report and when.
Is there free skip hire software?
The “Free option” column in the table shows what each product offered when we checked. Tippa’s core tools are free; tracking skips on hire is a paid add-on.
