Waste transfer station software compared

By James Parry, head of product at Tippa · Last checked

In short: every load a permitted site in England or Wales receives now has to be reported to Defra’s Digital Waste Tracking service, with Scotland following on 1 January 2027 and Northern Ireland, as DAERA has announced, from January 2027, and many products now do it. They differ most on price, whether there’s a free option, how they handle a weighbridge, and whether they do your waste returns too. The table sets out what each product says on its own website.

The products, side by side

As each product’s own website described it on , or on the date under its name where there is one. Prices are as each supplier gives them, and may or may not include VAT. Check the supplier’s website before you buy.

Tippa compared, one to one

How we compared them

We read each product’s own website on : who it says it’s for, its published prices, any free option, its apps and the main things it says it does. That makes this a comparison on paper. We haven’t measured how easy each is to use, how reliable it is or how good its support is, and a feature a website doesn’t mention may still exist.

We make Tippa, so it’s listed first and marked as ours; the rest are in alphabetical order. We’ve tried to be fair to every product, and to say plainly where Tippa is weaker. If anything here is wrong or out of date, email support@tip-pa.co.uk and we’ll check it and put it right. Product names belong to their owners.

What to look for

  • Is it on Defra’s list? Defra publishes a list of software that has connected to its service. Check a product is on it before you rely on it for reporting.
  • What it costs as you grow: per site, per user, per note or by volume. Work out the price for your number of sites, users and loads, not just the starting price.
  • Your weighbridge: some products read the weighbridge’s indicator or have their own weighbridge app; others have you type the weights in.
  • Returns: whether it builds your quarterly waste return and your hazardous waste consignee return from the loads, for your regulator.
  • Permits and registers: whether it checks each carrier’s registration and holds your permit’s waste codes and limits.
  • No signal at the gate: whether it keeps working offline and sends the records later.
  • Getting your records out: exports, and links to your accounts software.

Our guide to choosing digital waste tracking software has a fuller checklist of questions to ask any supplier.

Where Tippa is strong, and where it isn’t

Strong

  • The core tools are free, with no limit on loads, and reporting every received load to Defra is included on every plan. Any add-on can be tried free for a month.
  • Waste returns for the Environment Agency, NRW, SEPA and NIEA, and EA or NRW hazardous waste consignee returns, built from your records (paid add-ons).
  • A site’s permits are checked on their registers, with their waste codes and limits, and every carrier is checked on all four UK registers.
  • A weighbridge mode for whoever works the weighbridge, which keeps working when there’s no signal.
  • Hazardous waste consignment notes filled in from the record on the EA’s, NRW’s, SEPA’s or NIEA’s own form, free, with your part filled in as you book the load in.

Not there yet

  • It doesn’t read a weighbridge indicator or print weighbridge tickets yet: weights are typed in.
  • There’s no direct link to Xero, Sage or QuickBooks; invoices and payments export as CSV.
  • It runs in the web browser on any phone, tablet or computer, but isn’t in the App Store or Google Play yet.
  • Large sites with several weighbridges may be better served by dedicated weighbridge software.

Common questions

Which software can report to Defra’s Digital Waste Tracking?

Defra publishes a list of software providers that have connected to its service. Check a product is on that list before you rely on it for reporting.

Is there free software for a waste transfer station?

Some products have a free option: the “Free option” column in the table shows what each offered when we checked. Tippa’s core tools are free with no limit on loads, and reporting every received load to Defra is included.

Do I need weighbridge software as well?

Not always. Some products read a weighbridge indicator or have their own weighbridge app; others, Tippa included, have you type in the gross and tare weights. If you weigh a lot of loads, ask each supplier how its software works with your weighbridge.

How did you compare these products?

We read each product’s own website on : who it says it’s for, its published prices, any free option, its apps and the main things it says it does. That makes this a comparison on paper. We haven’t measured how easy each is to use, how reliable it is or how good its support is, and a feature a website doesn’t mention may still exist.

How Tippa helps

Tippa records every load your site receives, reports it to Defra for free, and builds your waste returns from the same records.

This page compares what each product’s own website said on the date shown. It isn’t a review or a recommendation of any product, and features and prices change. Check with each supplier before you buy.
