Waste tracking. Sorted.
Reporting to Defra, free.
Every load, recorded once.
Record a load once, from your phone or computer, and Tippa has the rest sorted: the transfer note filled in, the carrier checked, the photos and signatures kept with it, and the loads you receive reported to Defra.
Built for UK waste receivers, carriers, brokers and dealers. On Defra’s list of compatible software, with every one of Defra’s 14 test scenarios supported and none exempted (our results). Every load reported to Defra free, always: no cap, no contract, unlimited drivers. The core tools are free too.
What kind of waste business do you run?
Pick the one closest to yours to see what Tippa does for it and what it costs. Do more than one? Tick each when you sign up, and you get the tools for all of them.
A transfer station or site
You take waste in at a permitted site: a transfer station, treatment or recycling.
A waste carrier
You collect waste from producers, with one van or a fleet of lorries.
Skip hire
You hire out skips, and maybe tip them at your own yard.
A broker or dealer
You arrange collections for your customers, carried by other firms.
A hazardous waste site
You receive loads on consignment notes and send the consignee returns.
A bit of everything
See every feature, free and paid, and narrow them to the businesses you run.
Reports to Defra, free
Every load a receiving site takes in goes to Defra's Digital Waste Tracking service as it's received. Free on every plan, with no cap on loads.
See how it helpsChecks every carrier
Carrier and broker registrations are checked on all four UK public registers when you save, and again every night. An expired or revoked one is stopped. No number to hand? Search the registers by name.
See the checksFree to start
Recording your waste costs nothing. Pay only for extra sites, vehicles or office users, and the add-ons you want.
See pricingRecord it once. Tippa does the rest.
A load's details go in once, at the gate or at the collection. Everything built from them is filled in for you, so nobody types the same load again into a transfer note, Defra's service, a spreadsheet, a return or an invoice.
The transfer note, filled in
Every receipt, collection and load going out gets its transfer note pre-filled from the record, to print, email or sign on a phone. Hazardous waste gets its consignment note instead, on the EA's, NRW's, SEPA's or NIEA's own form.
Defra, told for you
Each load you receive goes to Digital Waste Tracking as you save it, and again if you change it, and Defra’s Waste Tracking ID is kept with it for when you’re asked. Free, for every load.
The carrier, checked and told
Their registration is checked on the public register as you save, and they're sent a confirmation with the transfer note and Defra’s Waste Tracking ID: by email, free, or by text or WhatsApp.
Your returns, added up Returns add-ons
Your waste return and hazardous waste return for the EA, NRW, SEPA or NIEA, totalled from the loads you've recorded and sent for you, not added up from paper at the end of the quarter.
Mass Balance, kept current Reporting add-on
What's on site, from what came in and went out, for each permit, with how close you are to its limits.
Invoices, made as you go Invoicing add-on
Each job goes on its customer's invoice as it's done, priced from your own price list, ready to check and send.

Run a site and a fleet?
Tick both, and the two sides work together.
Your own loads are expected
Book a collection in your own vehicle to your own site and the site sees it coming, ready to receive. Receiving it records the drop-off for your driver.
Moves stay in step
Send waste out on your own vehicle or to another of your sites, and the collection or receipt is created and kept in step. Each movement shows when it's delivered, received or rejected.
Tares ready at the weighbridge
Your fleet's tare weights are already there when your own vehicles come over the weighbridge.
Ready when someone asks.
Whether it's a customer, an auditor or the regulator, the answer is already in the record.
Every carrier checked
On all four UK registers when you save and again every night. An expired or revoked carrier can't be used.
A full history
Who created each record, who changed it and when, and who added each photo and signature.
What needs doing, first
Your dashboard shows what needs putting right, and which returns are due at each site.
Told when something happens
A bell on every screen, and a notification on your phone or computer, for what needs you.
Works without signal
Record receipts, collections and drop-offs offline, with photos and signatures.
Help on every screen
Ask Keith, Tippa's AI assistant, and he answers in steps for the screen you're on.
Season tickets, the new way
Set a regular load up once, and your customer signs the season ticket online. Repeated Records add-on
Notes read for you
Fill a record in from a transfer note, docket or weighbridge ticket instead of typing it. Note Uploads add-on
Your data, kept safe
Two-step sign-in by app, text or WhatsApp, and passkeys. Records stored in Ireland, photos and signatures in London.
Up and running in four steps.
There's nothing to install. Tippa runs in the browser on your phone, tablet or computer. Each setup video goes from signing up to a first record in under four minutes. Registering with Defra for your API code is done on Defra’s own service, so allow time for that.
Sign up and tick what you do
Receiver, carrier, broker or dealer—as many as fit. Carriers and brokers give their waste carrier registration, which Tippa checks on the register.
Add your site or first vehicle
Receivers add their site and permit, then their Defra API code to start reporting. Carriers add their first vehicle.
Bring your team
Invite office users, and add as many drivers as you like for free.
Record your first load
Receive a load or arrange a collection. Its photos, signatures and history stay with it from then on.
Digital waste tracking is here.
Since 1 October 2026, permitted waste receiving sites in England and Wales have had to report every load they receive to Defra’s Digital Waste Tracking service, within two working days. Scotland follows from January 2027. Tippa does it for you: add your Defra API code once, and each load is reported when you receive it, from the receipt you’re already recording. Change the receipt later and the change is sent too. If Defra’s service is down, Tippa keeps trying every hour until the load is accepted; if something needs fixing, whoever received the load is emailed, and saving the fix sends it again.
Still uploading Defra’s spreadsheet after every load? With Tippa there’s no template to fill in and no fresh file after each submission: record the load once and it’s sent for you. Tippa is on GOV.UK’s list of compatible software providers, which confirms that a provider has technically integrated with Defra’s Digital Waste Tracking API.
Every one of Defra’s 14 test scenarios, none exempted. Defra publishes test scenarios for software that reports received waste, and Tippa supports all of them: we ran them on 27 October 2026 and published the results, with the gaps we know of. Providers run and judge the scenarios themselves, so whichever software you consider, ask for its results and its exemptions.
Tippa reports every load free, with no cap. It will never be part of a paid plan (what’s free, and what isn’t). Most other waste software we’ve compared charges for it or limits it: many free plans stop at 5 to 20 notes, or leave reporting to Defra out. (See the comparison. Defra charges each organisation £26 a year for the service itself.)
Carriers and brokers are planned to follow from October 2027; Tippa’s collections already record the detail Defra has proposed for them. Read our guide to digital waste tracking, or see every date, by nation.
Tippa supports your process; it does not replace your responsibility to understand and meet the legal duties that apply to your business. For current requirements, always refer to official guidance and seek professional advice where needed.
Free where it counts. Pay only for what you use.
Recording your waste and reporting it to Defra is free, for every load, with no limit on how many: not a monthly allowance, and not a trial. It comes with unlimited drivers, one office user, one site for receivers and one vehicle for carriers, and each extra site brings another office user. Add more as your business grows, and switch on only the extras you want.

- Only need your loads reported to Defra? That’s free for your first site and £25 + VAT a month for each one after, each with an office user, with no add-on needed.
- No limit on loads, transfer notes or drivers: you never run out of free records, and Tippa never charges for reporting a load to Defra (Defra's own £26 a year is separate).
- No trial to run out: the free tools stay free.

- Add or remove anything at any time. You pay or are credited for the rest of the month straight away.
- Cancel any time, and keep what you've paid for until the end of the month.

- No adverts, ever.

Questions people ask.
Is Tippa really free?
Yes. Recording receipts, collections, drop-offs and waste output, checking carriers, working offline and reporting to Defra all cost nothing, with no limit on loads, transfer notes or reports to Defra. That comes with one office user, one site for receivers, one vehicle for carriers and as many drivers as you need. Each extra site brings another office user, and you only pay for more of those or for an add-on. See pricing.
Can we try an add-on before paying for it?
Yes: every add-on starts with a free month, and so do extra sites, vehicles or office users, with nothing to pay and no card needed. An admin switches one on in Manage Subscriptions in the Tippa web app, which shows what it will cost after. It's once each, so one your organisation has had before is charged straight away. When the month is up, it carries on at its usual price if you have a plan or have set up payment (optional: your card is saved with nothing to pay); if not, it stops and nothing is charged. When a trial of office users or sites ends, sites and vehicles are kept, but any office users over what's left are disabled, newest first, and an admin can swap who's active. More about free trials.
We run a site and we collect. Does that work?
Yes. Tick every type that fits when you sign up, and you get the tools for each. The two sides work together too: collections in your own vehicles to your own site are expected there as planned receipts, and your fleet's tare weights are ready at the weighbridge.
Our site has more than one permit. Can Tippa hold them all?
Yes, free. Add each permit and Tippa checks it on its regulator's register, then fills in the waste codes, limits and operations it allows from its standard rules or its published permit. Each load is received under the permit that allows its waste, a move between your permits is one form, and each permit gets its own returns. More about permits.
Can Tippa do season tickets?
Yes, with the Repeated Records add-on, the new way of doing season tickets. Set a regular load up once and your customer signs the season ticket online; then each load is created for you ahead of time as its own record, and Tippa prepares the renewal before the year is up. How season tickets work.
Can Tippa fill in hazardous waste consignment notes?
Yes, free. Each collection, load going out and receipt with hazardous waste gets its consignment note filled in from the record, with each waste's hazardous properties, components and any POPs checked against Defra's rules as you enter them, to print, download or email: the Environment Agency's form in England, Natural Resources Wales's in Wales, SEPA's in Scotland and NIEA's in Northern Ireland. The receiving site's part is filled in once the load is booked in. More about consignment notes.
A job takes several lorry loads. Does the producer sign for every one?
No, unless it's hazardous waste, which needs a consignment note for each load. Set it up as a job and the producer signs its transfer note once, on the driver's phone at a load's collection or online from a link, and it covers every load until the job is complete, while each load is still its own collection with its own vehicle, driver and receipt. Jobs are free, and with the Invoicing add-on the whole job goes on one invoice line. More about jobs needing several loads.
How do I report to Defra?
Register your organisation with Defra's Digital Waste Tracking service, using a Government Gateway or GOV.UK One Login business account. Defra then gives you an API code. Enter it once in Tippa, in the settings cog → Organisation Settings → Digital Waste Tracking Settings, and every load you receive from then on is reported for you. Tippa is on GOV.UK's list of compatible software providers. Tippa doesn't charge for this; Defra charges each organisation £26 a year for the service itself. Our digital waste tracking guide has the details.
I'm a carrier. Do I need to do anything for Defra yet?
Not yet, unless you also run a permitted site that receives waste: since 1 October 2026 only receiving sites report each load. Digital waste tracking for carriers, brokers and dealers is planned for October 2027, after an invited group starts early in 2027 and everyone can join from spring 2027. It will be through software, with no Defra web form. Keep doing your transfer notes as now. Tippa’s collections already record the detail Defra has proposed for carriers’ movements, so there’s nothing to change when it arrives. Every date.
Is Tippa approved by Defra?
No software is: Defra doesn't approve or certify waste tracking software. GOV.UK's list of compatible software providers, which Tippa is on, confirms that a provider has technically integrated with Defra's API. Defra also publishes test scenarios that each provider runs and judges for itself. Tippa supports all 14, with none exempted, and publishes its results and the gaps we know of. See our test results.
Why not just use Defra's spreadsheet?
You can for now: Defra calls it a temporary solution for receivers without software, expected to stay until at least October 2027. It means filling in Defra's template and uploading it, with a fresh file after each submission, on top of the transfer notes you keep anyway. With Tippa, the receipt you record is the report: each load is sent as it's received, free, and Defra's tracking ID is kept on the receipt. Spreadsheet or software.
Does reporting to Defra replace our waste returns?
No, not yet. In England and Wales you must still send waste returns in line with your permit, and hazardous waste consignee returns, until further notice, as well as reporting each load to Defra. In Scotland and Northern Ireland, SEPA's and NIEA's returns carry on as before. Tippa builds them from the same receipts it sends to Defra: your waste return with the Waste Returns add-on, and your EA or NRW hazardous waste return with Consignee Returns. What you still need to do.
What happens if we miss the two working days?
Not reporting a load in time is an offence. In England and Wales the penalties include a £1,000 fixed monetary penalty, unlimited variable penalties and prosecution. Tippa sends each load as you receive it, so the deadline only matters when a load can't be sent: you see it straight away, with the date it's due by, and whoever received it is emailed. The rules in full.
What happens if Defra doesn't accept a load?
You see it straight away, on the receipt and in your dashboard's Needs Attention, with Defra's reason. If Defra's service isn't answering, Tippa tries again every hour; if something needs fixing, whoever received the load is emailed, and saving the fix sends it again. More about what Tippa does.
Can Tippa send receipts and invoices by text or WhatsApp?
Yes, on any plan: 4p a WhatsApp message and 8p a text, plus VAT, from a balance you top up, with 25 free to start. Each customer gets them the way their record says, with a link to view and download it, and one that can't go is emailed instead. Drivers' sign-in codes by text or WhatsApp are free. More about messages.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Tippa runs in the web browser on your phone, tablet or computer. Once it has been opened on a device, it keeps working when you lose signal.
Do my drivers need an app?
No. Drivers use Tippa in their phone's browser, as many as you like, free. They sign in with a code by text, WhatsApp or email instead of a password, see the day's work on Driver Home, and collect with photos and signatures; with no signal, it's saved and sent when they're back in range. Tippa for waste carriers.
What if I get stuck?
Tap the ? on any screen and ask Keith, Tippa's AI assistant, who answers in plain steps for the screen you're on. If he can't help, report a problem from his panel, or email support@tip-pa.co.uk. More about Keith.
Does it work in Scotland and Northern Ireland?
Yes. Recording waste and checking carriers work across the UK, on all four nations' registers, and waste returns cover sites in all four: the EA's, NRW's, SEPA's and DAERA's. Hazardous waste is covered too: each nation's own consignment note filled in, the EA's and NRW's returns, and each note sent to SEPA or NIEA as the load is booked in. Scotland and Northern Ireland.
We use another system now. Can you help us move?
Yes. Bring your customers, sites, vehicles, past receipts, container types, skips and prices across yourself, free, from Tippa's Excel or CSV template: every row is checked before anything is saved, and you can undo an import for 7 days. For the rest of your history, get in touch and we'll work out the move with you.
Can Tippa work with the software we already use?
Yes. If you'd rather keep some of your current systems, such as weighbridge, accounts or job management software, we can build an integration so records pass between them and Tippa. Get in touch and tell us what you use.
Does it work with my weighbridge?
Yes, with no add-on. Give your operator the Weighbridge role and they get a quick screen to weigh each vehicle in and out, with regular vehicles' tares remembered and weighing carried on when the signal drops. A weighbridge operator is an office user. Tippa doesn't read your weighbridge indicator directly yet, so the operator types in the reading. Tippa for transfer stations.
We hire skips. Can Tippa keep track of them?
Yes, with the Skip Hire add-on. Each skip you deliver is recorded with who has it, where and when it's due back, with the overdue ones on your dashboard, reminders to customers, deliveries and exchanges on your drivers' rounds, and a register of your skips with QR labels and a map. Tippa for skip hire.
Can Tippa do our invoicing?
Yes, with the Invoicing add-on. Tippa prices each collection and receipt from your own price lists, puts it on its customer's invoice and emails it, then keeps track of payments, what's overdue and what each customer owes, and exports it all for your accounts software. More about invoicing.
Can I export to Xero, QuickBooks or Sage?
Yes, with the Invoicing add-on: your invoices and credit notes export as a CSV file to bring into Xero, QuickBooks, Sage or other accounts software, or to keep as a sales day book. There's no live link to them yet, so you import the file yourself. More about invoicing.
Is there a contract?
No. The free plan has no term, and paid extras are month to month: an admin adds or removes them at any time from Manage Subscriptions, charged or credited for the rest of the month.
Where is my data, and can I take it with me?
Your records are stored in Ireland, and photos and signatures in London; our privacy policy lists the service providers, such as payments and error reporting, that may handle data elsewhere. You can export all your data at any time, and an admin can delete the whole organisation. Security and your data says how it's encrypted, backed up and kept to the people you choose.
What happens if I cancel?
You keep what you've paid for until the end of the month, then go back to the free plan. Your records stay, and everything free keeps working. Office users over the free plan's allowance are disabled when the plan ends, not deleted: when you cancel, you pick who stays, and invitations that no longer fit are cancelled. Sites and vehicles are kept, but you can't add more.
Can I change what type of business we are later?
Yes, an admin can add or remove types at any time. The one exception: once your site has received a load, you stay a receiver, so those records always stay with you.
Need a hand, or want to talk?
Whether it's a question about your account, a record, digital waste tracking or pricing, or you want help moving from your current system or connecting it to Tippa, send us the details and we'll help you find the next step.
